Motorcycles carry fuel residues, engine oils, lead-acid or lithium batteries, and optional airbag modules or tire inflators. Under IATA regulations, these trigger UN 3166 (Vehicle, flammable liquid powered) classification, requiring a certified Shipper's Declaration for dangerous goods.
What are the fuel and battery requirements for shipping a motorcycle on WestJet Cargo or Air Canada Cargo?
Fuel tanks must generally be drained below 1/4 (25%) capacity, electrical alarm/GPS tracking systems must be deactivated, and battery terminals must be securely isolated to prevent accidental short circuits during transit.
Can I leave gear, helmets, or tools in the motorcycle panniers?
Non-hazardous gear like clothing or helmets can remain, but panniers must be completely free of uncertified loose liquids, chain sprays, aerosols, or uninspected spare lithium tool batteries.
